Mazatlán officially opened its 2026 Carnival with the coronation of Javier I as King of Joy, in a vibrant ceremony held at Teodoro Mariscal Stadium on the night of February 12.

The event marked the first major coronation of this year’s Carnival season, themed “Arriba la Tambora,” and drew thousands of locals and visitors who filled the stadium to witness the symbolic beginning of the port’s most celebrated tradition.

Under the artistic concept “Echoes of Tambora and Tradition,” the ceremony unfolded as a staged narrative of Mazatlán’s cultural identity. Performers from the Municipal Institute of Culture’s Folkloric Ballet and Astros Academy recreated the rhythm of the Pacific, the daily life of coastal workers, and the collective energy that defines Carnival.

Traditional pieces such as “Mi Diana,” “El Manicero,” and “El Pato Asado” resonated throughout the stadium, reinforcing the unmistakable brass sound that has become synonymous with Mazatlán’s festivities.

A tribute was also paid to Daniel Osuna, who marked 25 years since his own coronation as King of Joy, reminding the audience that Carnival tradition in Mazatlán is not replaced — it is renewed.

The highlight of the night came as Javier Osuna advanced solemnly to the stage to be proclaimed His Majesty Javier I. Accompanied by his royal court, he received the crown amid applause and tambora drumrolls, sealing a symbolic pact between sovereign and city — the guardianship of laughter, celebration, and collective spirit.

Moments later, fireworks and Papaquis filled the night sky, officially signaling that Carnival 2026 was underway.

The celebration continued with a live performance by regional music star Edén Muñoz, transforming ceremony into full festivity and closing a night where identity, music, and community converged.

Mazatlán does not simply host Carnival.

It lives it.
